Challenges in HR management

We had the opportunity to speak with Bu Evelina, Director of HR at Wisma Kanta Utama, about the challenges of HR management in the hospitality industry. In daily operations, the HR team faces various complexities, including shift management, payroll calculation, and leave administration.

As a company in the hospitality industry, Wisma Kanta Utama operates a shift-based work system to ensure services run 24/7. The company has two main workforce categories:

  • Back Office Team, with regular working hours from Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM–6:00 PM.
  • Operations Team, working across four shift patterns (shift 1, 2, 3, and middle), covering 24-hour operations.

Previously, shift management was handled manually using Excel. However, this method became increasingly inefficient, especially when adjusting employee schedules to match market demand fluctuations. Each week, shift schedules had to be updated, and last-minute changes were common, making the process more complex and prone to errors.

Another major challenge was payroll calculation. With 300 employees, the Excel-based system previously used often made it difficult for the HR team to adjust salary components.
